Young Reader Review: WONDER by R. J. Palacio

This month’s Young Reader Review comes from Ben, a seventh grader who loves sports and reading. I hope you enjoy his thoughtful review as much as I did!

Hi! Thank you so much for joining us today! Please tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Ben. I’m 12 and I am in seventh grade. I play basketball, football, run track and love to read. When I have time, I enjoy camping and hiking. I have three siblings and I play the snare drum in my middle school band.

You are a really busy seventh grader, Ben! It is great to hear that you make time for reading, even though you have so much going on. What types of books do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy reading fiction books (middle grade and up for novels). I also like biographies and historical stories. Sometimes, I read magazines like National Geographic and Sports Illustrated.

What is your very favorite genre?

I love fantasy book series like Eragon, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings.

The Harry Potter series is one of my favorite series, as well! Fantasy is so much fun to read, isn’t it? I know it is hard to pick a favorite book of all time, but tell us about your current favorite.

My current favorite is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The book is about a 10-year-old boy named August who has a facial deformity. August is normal in every way except for his appearance. He’s entering a mainstream school for the first time after being home-schooled his whole life. At first, August is teased, but after a while, everyone grows to accept and like August. Wonder is a great book about how August survives school. I liked this book because it inspires me to be brave when life is challenging.

Wonder sounds like an amazing book, Ben! I will definitely have to check it out! Are there any kinds of books that you would like to see more of?

I would like to see more fantasies with people who have magic powers.

What kinds of stories do you enjoy writing?

I like writing fiction because I can make anything up I want.

I completely understand, Ben—the ability to create worlds of our own is the true *magic* of writing!☺ Is there anything else you would like to share with us about books or reading?

Wonder was one of my required summer reading books. I recommend reading Wonder because it is a great book that deals with bullying.

Thank you so much for this terrific review, Ben, and thanks again for joining us today!

Thank you for having me!
