POETRY FRIDAY: Welcoming January and an Antonym Diamante Poem

Thanks to Betsy at I Think in Poems for hosting Poetry Friday today.

Happy New Year! Every January, as I pack up the last of the Christmas decorations, I breathe a secret sigh of relief. As much as I love the holiday season, by the New Year I am more than ready to settle into the quiet of January and return to our routine. Despite the colder weather and shorter days, January is one of my favorite months of the year.

As we settle into the stillness of winter, I have an antonym diamante poem to share. (I discuss antonym and synonym diamante poems more in depth here, if you’d like to read more.)

December
hectic, exciting
celebrating, going, eating
parties, presents, movies, nights in
relaxing, staying, refocusing
calm, cozy
January
Some years we get a bit of snow in our area of SC, but it is rare.

Wishing you a Happy New Year and a serene, productive winter! Happy Writing!

  1. Becky, I like antonymn diamantes very much -- something about starting out with one thing and ending up with something different appeals to me.
Your take on January is great! Usually we hear complaints about the weather, but "calm, cozy" sounds much better :-)

    1. Thank you, Tabatha! I live in SC and the weather is usually pretty mild in the winter...my main complaint is that we never really get snow! It's still cold, calm, and peaceful, though! = )

  2. Happy New Year! I'm ready to get back into my routine, too. Of course all these snow days aren't allowing that to happen. lol

    1. I hope you are enjoying the snow, Kelly, and not dealing with snow issues! School doesn't start back here until Monday, so my boys are home, too. We're having fun! = )

  4. Love your poem, Becky, and especially your seamless transition from December to January. I, too, long for the quiet routine, though it's difficult when your daughter is born 3 weeks after Christmas! Getting through it... getting through it....

  5. I still have my Christmas tree up...Which is just sad b/c it's a really small one, and would only take like 5 mins to put away, lol! I'm off this weekend, so I'll do it then. Happy New Year to you as well!

    1. Thanks, Leandra! We put away all of our decorations except our tree on New Years. The flu hit all sides of our family this year at varying intervals, so we won't get to celebrate Christmas with my in laws until next weekend. The tree will finally come down this weekend, though--I don't think it will make it another week!

  7. I can relate to the busy-ness of December transitioning to the coziness of January...my tree is still up so that we can enjoy its beauty for a few more days free of all the holiday chaos. Love your diamante! I just wrote my first antonym diamante, and it's more challenging than it appears. Thanks for sharing!

  9. In years past, I enjoyed trying out the different poetry forms with my girls. Happy writing, Becky! (And I'm jealous, you've already cleaned up your Christmas decorations!)
